Crazy Horse, Chief Joseph, Geronimo, and Quanah Parker each led their people through the final decades of armed resistance against United States expansion, and this film gives each man his own portrait rather than folding them into a single narrative of defeat. Crazy Horse fights for Lakota land and a way of life built around the buffalo and the open plains. Chief Joseph leads the Nez Perce on a long retreat toward the Canadian border rather than accept a reservation. Geronimo keeps Apache bands moving through the Southwest borderlands long after most resistance elsewhere had ended. Quanah Parker, born to a Comanche father and a white captive mother, fights first and later navigates life on the reservation his people were forced onto. The film treats all four as men who calculated, at some point, that dying was preferable to giving up their people's independence, and follows what that choice actually cost each of them.
