Abdul Aziz Ghazi, the cleric who leads Islamabad's Red Mosque, preaches that Pakistan's government is an enemy of Islam and that armed jihad is the only path to a truly Islamic state. Filmmakers Hemal Trivedi and Mohammed Naqvi get remarkable access to Ghazi as he expands a network of madrassas that indoctrinate children, some as young as six, into his worldview, while survivors of the mosque's bloody 2007 siege describe what happened when the Pakistani army stormed the compound. The film follows two students caught inside that system, Talha and Zarina, whose attempts to break away from the madrassas play out alongside interviews with physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy, who argues that Pakistan's failing secular schools are what drive families toward religious ones in the first place. Threats against the filmmakers and the country's leading liberal politicians run through the background of the story. The result is a close, unnerving look at how a single mosque built a pipeline from classroom to militancy, and at the people trying to shut it down or escape it.
