Alpine glaciers have spent a century sealing away whatever fell into them, and this film follows the archaeologists racing to catch what the melt is now giving back. The centerpiece is the White War, the WWI front fought at 4,000 meters where roughly 180,000 soldiers died from cold, avalanche, and combat in trenches carved directly into ice and rock; researchers pull rifles, boots, and preserved bodies from retreating glaciers and use them to reconstruct daily life at an altitude no army had fought at before. The story then jumps forward to a WWII Nazi aircraft found carrying classified radar equipment, and back thousands of years to a Bronze Age container researchers date to roughly 4,500 years old, its contents and purpose still debated. A quieter thread follows the recovery of a couple who vanished into a Swiss glacier in 1942 and resurfaced 75 years later, still together. Interviews with the archaeologists and historians doing the recovery work anchor each case, with location footage of the ice fields themselves.
