Peter Owen-Jones, a Church of England vicar, spends a year's sabbatical with a BBC crew visiting eighty faiths across the globe rather than reading about them from a pulpit. In Tokyo he takes part in Shinto rituals built around nature and ancestor worship. In Ladakh he joins monks for morning prayers before visiting a mosque where Buddhism, Bon, and Islam sit side by side in one community. In Jerusalem he stands at the Western Wall, talks with a monk at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and joins a Muslim family for Friday prayers at the Dome of the Rock, tracing how three religions share and contest the same streets. The itinerary also reaches Angkor Wat's temples in Cambodia, voodoo ceremonies in Haiti, and sacred rites among Australia's indigenous communities. Owen-Jones takes part rather than just observing, kneeling, praying, and eating alongside the people he meets. He returns from the trip less interested in doctrinal differences than in the recurring human needs, comfort, meaning, belonging, that each faith seems built to answer.
