Andy Laub and Ian Mangiardi leave comfortable lives behind to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, the 2,500-mile route running from the Mexican border to Canada along the West Coast. The film follows their trek start to finish, opening in the desert where rattlesnakes, scorching heat, and dehydration set the pace, then tracking them north into the Sierras, where they hit one of the largest snowstorms on record for the range. Hundreds of still photographs are cut into the footage alongside handheld camera work from the trail itself, and the soundtrack is built from two dozen original songs Laub wrote and recorded for the project. Other through-hikers they meet along the way appear on camera talking about why they're out there, giving the film a chorus of voices beyond its two leads. There's no narrator shaping the story after the fact; it's assembled from what the two men shot as they went, blisters, exhaustion, and all, closing with their arrival at the Canadian border.
