Asian Brides for Sale
Across Asia, a booming mail-order bride business promises Western men wives and promises poor women a way out of poverty, but the film follows the trail from matchmaking agencies and glossy brochures to houses where the marriages turn violent. Investigators and support workers describe cases where brides are isolated, controlled, and in the worst instances killed by the husbands who bought their introduction, while agency operators defend the industry as a legitimate matchmaking service. Interviews with survivors and family members lay out how debt, language barriers, and immigration status leave women with almost no way to leave once they arrive in a new country. The film also traces how easily the same networks that arrange marriages shade into sex trafficking, with brokers moving women between the two markets depending on demand. It is a plain, interview-driven account of an industry operating largely in the open, and of the women whose safety depends entirely on the man who paid for them.
