At the Museum

The Museum of Modern Art opens its own doors to the camera for an eight-part series on the work that keeps a major museum running behind the galleries. Curators debate what belongs on the walls, conservators handle canvases and sculptures that cannot be replaced, and registrars track works moving between storage, loan, and display. Preparators build and light installations piece by piece, while staff in the library and archives manage the paperwork and history that back up every acquisition. Episodes follow specific projects through the building, from a painting being cleaned to an exhibition being hung gallery by gallery, so the process stays concrete rather than abstract. MoMA staff narrate their own jobs directly to camera, giving the series the feel of an internal tour rather than an outside profile. Taken together, the episodes add up to a portrait of a museum as a working institution, with a payroll, a warehouse, and constant decisions about what modern art is worth preserving.
