Napoleon Bonaparte's rise from Corsican obscurity to Emperor of the French frames this account of his defining victory. The film traces his early military career through the Italian and Egyptian campaigns before settling on the Austerlitz campaign of 1805, where his outnumbered army lured Austrian and Russian forces onto ground he had already chosen and broke them by seizing the Pratzen Heights. Reconstructions and period paintings illustrate troop movements and battlefield tactics while historians explain why Austerlitz became the textbook case for maneuver warfare taught at military academies. Narrator Mike Leighton carries the story forward past the victory into the campaigns that undid it, following the army into Russia in 1812 and through the retreat that gutted it, before closing on the final defeat at Waterloo in 1815. The structure gives equal weight to triumph and collapse, treating Austerlitz less as an isolated masterpiece than as the high point of a career whose overreach is visible in hindsight.
