Autism: Understanding the 'Spectrum'
Autism spectrum disorder resists easy definition, and this DW film sets out to show why, following autistic people through their daily routines and letting their families and caregivers describe what a diagnosis actually changes. Some of the people on camera hold jobs and live independently; others need lifelong support, and the film uses that range to push back against a single stereotype of what autism looks like. Researchers Tony Attwood and Professor Ludger Tebartz van Elst appear throughout, explaining current thinking on how autistic brains process sensory information differently, why touch or eye contact can be difficult, and why the causes of the condition remain only partly understood. The film also tracks the practical problem of underdiagnosis, especially in people whose symptoms are subtle enough to be missed for years. Rather than presenting autism as a problem to be solved, the documentary treats it as a spectrum in the literal sense, with interviews and everyday scenes that let viewers see how differently it manifests from one person to the next.
