Borderline Personality Disorder is a relatively recent addition to psychiatric diagnosis, and this video from NewYork-Presbyterian's Borderline Personality Disorder Resource Center lays out what it looks like and how it gets treated. It runs through the symptom list clinicians use to identify it: fear of abandonment, extreme mood swings, unstable self-image, impulsive behavior, self-injury, suicidal ideation, and in some cases brief psychotic episodes. The film is direct about how rarely BPD shows up alone, noting its frequent overlap with eating disorders, substance abuse, major depression, and bipolar disorder, an overlap that often delays an accurate diagnosis in the first place. Rather than dramatizing a single case, it frames BPD as a condition that strains not just the individual but the family and support network around them, and argues for treatment approaches built around that wider circle rather than the patient alone.
