Back to Sleepy Hollow: Kazakhstan
Kalachi, a small settlement in northern Kazakhstan, has dealt with an unexplained sleeping sickness for more than three years: residents suddenly collapse into deep sleep or lethargy, sometimes for days, with no clear trigger. This film returns to the town to check on the medical investigation into what locals call the affliction, following researchers and doctors as they test theories ranging from carbon monoxide or other contaminants seeping from a nearby abandoned uranium mine to underlying medical conditions and even psychological explanations. Residents describe the disruption to daily life, from missed work to fear about letting children out of sight, and the toll of living for years without a diagnosis. The film weighs each hypothesis against what has actually been ruled out, rather than settling on one answer, and tracks whether recent findings bring investigators any closer to identifying a cause after years of dead ends.
