Backbreaking Work: Deep-Sea Fishing in the Arctic Ocean
A trawler out of Cuxhaven sails from Tromsø into the Arctic Ocean to hunt cod, carrying a crew committed to six weeks at sea and around-the-clock shifts. Pay is mostly commission, so every haul matters: a bigger catch means a bigger paycheck, and the film follows the men processing fish directly on deck under that pressure. Midway through the voyage the processing equipment stalls without explanation, raising the real possibility of an early, costly return to port. Scientific observer Tim Schorr is also aboard to log the catch for research purposes, until he falls ill and needs evacuation from a ship that is two days from the nearest harbor. Camera crews capture the physical toll of the work, the cramped quarters, and the rhythm of life governed entirely by the sea and the fish counts, alongside the crew's own reasons for choosing this life despite its hardships. The result is a close, practical look at an industry most people only encounter as a price on a label.
