Bali: Paving Paradise – Is Mass Tourism Destroying the Island?

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Bali built its reputation on rice terraces, temples, and beaches, and decades of mass tourism have been cashing in on that image ever since. The film tracks what unchecked development has done to the island known as the Island of the Gods: hotel construction spreading over farmland, rivers and coastlines choked with trash, and infrastructure straining to keep up with the crowds arriving every year. Local voices describe watching the landscape change within a single generation, from villages surrounded by rice paddies to strips of resorts and traffic. The film sets the tourism industry's economic benefits against the environmental cost, following the waste that mass visitation generates and the pollution now reaching Bali's water and coastline. It does not settle for postcard footage instead spending time in the places tourists rarely see, the dump sites and overdeveloped districts behind the resort fronts, to ask whether the island can keep absorbing visitors at this rate without losing what made it a destination in the first place.
