On the Jamuna River in southern Bangladesh, sandy islands called chars rise from the water in dry season and vanish under it when the monsoon comes. The film follows the Chauras, families who build entire lives on this shifting ground, through both extremes of the yearly cycle. Rahim Shorkar works the fertile silt soil during the dry months, racing to bring in crops before the next flood, and says he would never trade this life for the mainland. His wife Alea is less certain, worried about what future their six-year-old son Ashik has on land that can disappear overnight. Neighbor Shuruz Saman has lost his fields and house to the river six times, each time spending his entire savings to start over, and the community turns out to help move the corrugated iron walls of his home yet again. Shot across both seasons on the islands themselves, the film shows a way of life organized entirely around water, one that climate change is expected to make harsher still.
