Bangladesh grows more jute than almost anywhere else on earth, and this film follows the fiber from the flooded fields where farmers Ayub Ali Akand and Afaz Uddin Akand cut stalks by hand with machetes to the factories that weave them into fabric. Known locally as the "golden fiber" for its shimmer, jute has given farmers a modest living, though the work is grueling and not always profitable. The film's central figure is scientist Mubarak Ahmad Khan, who has turned jute's high cellulose content into a biodegradable foil called the Sonali Bag, engineered as a direct replacement for plastic shopping bags. Interviews with Khan, the Hijli village farmers, and factory workers trace how the invention might change jute's fortunes just as ocean and land pollution make plastic alternatives urgent. The documentary weighs the technical promise of Sonali Bag against the economic weight of the global plastic industry, and asks whether commercial success could convince farming families to keep working the fields for another generation.
