Bangladesh is usually reduced in Western coverage to poverty statistics, garment factories, and monsoon flooding, and this film starts by naming that blind spot before turning to a less-covered story: the growing influence of Islamist politics in a country founded on secular, Bengali nationalist principles. It looks at how religious conservatism has spread through mosques, madrasas, and political parties since independence, and what that shift means for a population still largely defined abroad by economic hardship. Interviews and footage from Dhaka and rural districts trace the tension between the country's secular constitution and the rise of groups pushing an explicitly Islamic vision for national identity. The film treats Bangladesh as a case study in how religious movements gain ground in a developing democracy, rather than as a simple poverty narrative, and asks what the country looks like once the West's usual framing is set aside.
