What happened before the Big Bang, if anything did? This film puts that question to physicists working on loop quantum cosmology, a candidate theory for merging general relativity with quantum mechanics at the scales where classical physics breaks down. Abhay Ashtekar of Penn State and Iván Agulló of Cambridge explain how their models replace the singularity at time zero with a "bounce," a previous universe contracting and rebounding into ours, and the film uses CGI, including spin-foam and hourglass-universe animations, to sketch what that looks like without pretending the pictures are literal. The interviews also take on the low entropy of the early universe, the possibility of a multiverse, and whether anomalies in Planck spacecraft data could be fingerprints of whatever came before. Nobody here claims the case is closed.
