Lepoglava holds Croatia's five hundred most dangerous inmates, men serving an average of twenty years for murder, drug trafficking, and organized crime. It is the country's oldest prison and its most tightly controlled, yet just over two hundred officers are responsible for the entire population, outnumbered on every shift. Cameras follow staff as they count inmates five times a day, patrol the wings, and manage a system built on a strict trade: cooperation earns privileges like better cells or workshop access, while rule-breaking brings solitary confinement and lost freedoms. Interviews with guards and prisoners lay out how that incentive structure keeps order in a building never designed for today's population of hardened offenders. The episode is part of the Behind Bars: World's Toughest Prisons series, which sends crews inside a different national prison system each installment. Here the focus stays on the daily mechanics of control: headcounts, cell searches, and the constant calculation of who can be trusted with a little more rope.
