Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons, grew up Mormon in Las Vegas and left the faith as an adult, but the church's teachings on homosexuality keep pulling him back. He starts digging into the data on LGBT youth suicide in Utah, one of the highest rates in the country, and starts talking to young gay and transgender Mormons who describe being taught that their identity is a sin. The film follows Reynolds as he organizes LoveLoud, a music festival meant to bring queer kids and their families together in a state where coming out can mean losing both. He meets with church-affiliated therapists, grieving parents, and Mormon leaders, pushing for a sit-down with church officials that never quite materializes. Interviews with Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, himself an excommunicated gay Mormon, add a second view of what leaving the church costs. The film stays close to Reynolds's own frustration, watching a believer try to reform an institution that still will not fully hear him.
