The subject here is awareness itself, and whether it can be separated from the thoughts running through it. Shot along the West Coast, from California up into Canada, the film sits with the plain observation that most people mistake the constant stream of thought for who they are, and asks what is left if that stream is set aside. There is no narrator walking through a thesis with evidence or case studies; instead the film is built as an extended, unhurried argument for looking directly at one's own awareness rather than at the mental commentary about it. It doesn't stage interviews or reenactments so much as invite a kind of shared sitting-still, closer to a guided contemplation than a conventional documentary. The question it keeps returning to is simple and hard to answer: is your sense of self the thoughts, or the awareness they appear in?
