Benazir Bhutto inherited Pakistani politics from her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a prime minister the military hanged after a coup, and the film follows how that inheritance shaped her own rise and death. Archival footage and interviews trace her path from Harvard and Oxford student to the first woman elected to lead a Muslim nation, twice serving as prime minister and twice being dismissed on corruption charges. Years of exile in Dubai and London give way to her return to Pakistan in 2007, greeted by huge crowds and a bombing that killed scores of people at her homecoming rally in Karachi. Weeks later she was assassinated in Rawalpindi ahead of the 2008 elections she was expected to win. The film uses family members, political allies, and journalists to place her assassination inside the longer story of a dynasty, a military that kept unseating it, and a country that turned her into a symbol the moment she died.
