Goliath of Gath, champion of one of the five Philistine city-states, stands at the center of the episode's account of 1 Samuel 17: a nine-foot warrior who taunts the Israelite army until a shepherd boy named David steps forward with a sling and five stones. The film traces how this single duel was first told to establish David's claim to the throne of Israel, long before it became the underdog story people know today. It then follows the story's afterlife through interpretation: post-Classical Jewish tradition casts Goliath as the embodiment of paganism facing down the God of Israel, while later Christian readings turn the fight into a prefiguring of Christ's victory over sin and the Church's triumph over Satan. Rather than staging a reenactment, the episode works through text and tradition, showing how the same fifteen verses got reread by successive communities to mean something different each time, from royal propaganda to religious allegory.
