Ali Mohamed spends fourteen years working inside American institutions while reporting to Al-Qaeda, and this film traces how he pulled it off. A former commando in the Egyptian army, he joins Al-Qaeda in the 1980s, then talks his way into the US Army, where he rises to become a trainer for Special Forces and passes military tactics and doctrine back to the network. He later takes a security job at the US embassy in Nairobi, using the access to help plan the 1998 bombing that kills more than 200 people, and at various points he also works as an FBI translator, feeding information both ways. Interviews with FBI agents, former colleagues, and terrorism analysts, alongside period footage and photographs, reconstruct how a single operative moved between the Army, the embassy, and federal law enforcement without triggering the vetting that should have caught him. The film's real subject is that failure of vetting itself, and what it let Al-Qaeda build undetected.
