Bin Wars
Used clothing donation bins look charitable, but behind them is a fight over territory and profit. Journalist Diana Swain investigates who actually owns the bins scattered across parking lots and street corners, tracing where the donated clothes go after they're dropped off. Some bins belong to registered charities; others are placed by for-profit operators using charity-like branding to collect goods they then sell overseas by the ton. Swain follows the money and the confrontations that follow when rival operators try to remove or replace each other's bins without permission, turning donation drop-off spots into contested ground. The film raises a plain question for anyone who has ever tossed a bag of clothes into one of these boxes: does the label on the bin tell you anything true about where your donation ends up?
