Six women die in childbirth every day in Nepal, a toll that outpaced the country's decade-long civil war: the fighting killed over 15,000 people while childbirth killed more than 22,000 women in the same period, yet the deaths barely made the newspapers. Filmmaker Subina Shrestha, five months pregnant herself, sets out to find why, traveling into communities to hear the stories behind the statistics rather than the numbers alone. The film sits her own pregnancy against the mothers she meets, using that contrast to press the question of what has actually changed since the war ended and a new government promised safer births. Political instability has slowed reform, and the measures introduced so far show little effect on the ground. Shrestha's approach stays personal rather than statistical, following individual women and health workers to show what maternal care looks like in practice, and where it fails.
