Birthright – Surfing with Passion

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Michael surfs every day, paddling out from a wheelchair to find what he calls his natural self in the water. Director Sean Mullens follows the ritual itself, the transfer from chair to board, the paddle out, the wait for a wave, without narration doing the explaining for him. The camera stays close on the mechanics of it: how he balances, how he catches a break, what changes in his face once he is up and moving with the water instead of against gravity on land. Friends and fellow surfers appear in the background of the beach scenes, but the film keeps its attention on Michael's own rhythm rather than turning him into a subject for outside commentary. It is a short, observational portrait built around one repeated act, the daily paddle-out, treated as the thing that defines him rather than his disability. The film says more through what it shows than through what anyone explains.
