BookTok and Gen Z: Are Young People Saving the Book Market?
BookTok, the corner of TikTok where readers trade recommendations, took off during the 2020 pandemic and now drives sales of "New Adult" romance novels aimed at young women. DW follows the people turning that online scene into a business and a lifestyle. Book blogger Jess, known online as miss.Nerdstagram, meets followers in person at the Book Ball held at Namedy Castle. Author Kim Leopold, from the town of Rheine, writes "own voice" fiction touching on mental health, body positivity and ADHD, and the film catches her nervously awaiting reader reaction to her latest book, which shifts focus from a single heroine to a married couple. In Jever, the Riekes have opened a shop devoted entirely to New Adult titles while also running a comedy social-media account as a couple. The film follows all three to the Frankfurt Book Fair, where traditional literary critics remain skeptical of the genre's glossy covers and romance plots, and asks whether BookTok's enthusiasm can translate into lasting legitimacy.
