A crumbling border post high in the Alps and a police checkpoint on the Mediterranean coast mark the same frontier: the one between France and Italy at the border of Liguria and the Alpes-Maritimes. DW's film follows the paradox of a Europe that tore down internal barriers after the Iron Curtain fell yet now polices this stretch more heavily than almost any other EU border. Migrants who crossed the Mediterranean or came down the Balkan route through Italy try to continue north into France and get turned back, sometimes repeatedly, while officers patrol mountain paths and coastal roads to intercept them. The crew talks to people attempting the crossing, to French border police enforcing the checks, and to residents and volunteers on both sides who watch the contradiction play out on their doorstep. Interviews and on-location footage from checkpoints, trails, and towns along the frontier lay out the practical mechanics of how a supposedly open Europe still decides, mile by mile, who gets to move freely and who doesn't.
