Borneo Death Blow

52 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

The Penan of Borneo live as nomadic hunter-gatherers in the rainforests of Malaysia, moving through the jungle in small family groups and relying on blowpipes tipped with tajem, a poison made from tree sap potent enough to bring down a wild boar in minutes. The film follows Penan hunters as they prepare the poison, track game, and demonstrate the skills that have kept their way of life intact even as logging and development close in around their territory. Interviews and observational footage show how the tribe reads the forest for food, medicine, and shelter, and how that knowledge is passed between generations without written records. The blowpipe hunt itself is the film's centerpiece, shown in enough detail to explain why tajem still outperforms modern alternatives for the Penan's purposes. Underneath the survival craft sits a quieter question about how much longer this knowledge can survive the shrinking of the forest it depends on.
