On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, and killed twelve students and a teacher before killing themselves. Michael Moore starts there and asks a blunter question than the news coverage did: why does the United States have so many more gun deaths than other wealthy countries with plenty of guns of their own, like Canada? He opens a bank account to get a free rifle as a promotion, walks two Columbine survivors into a K-Mart to return the bullets still lodged in their bodies, and interviews Marilyn Manson, blamed by pundits for inspiring the shooting, about what he'd actually say to teenagers if he could. An animated sequence retells America's history as a chain of fear, and Moore corners NRA president Charlton Heston at his own house with photos of child victims. The film also notes a Lockheed Martin missile plant sits a few miles from the school, unsettling the simple explanations everyone reached for first.
