Bruce Lee died in 1973 with his final film, Game of Death, only partly shot, and John Little builds this documentary around what survives of it. Little, a longtime researcher of Lee's writings and philosophy, pulls together behind-the-scenes footage, the surviving action sequences Lee choreographed and filmed himself, and interviews with people who trained with him or worked on his sets. The film moves past the action-star image to track Lee's own thinking, drawing on his notebooks and letters about Jeet Kune Do and the martial philosophy he was still developing when he died. Screen tests, rehearsal footage, and outtakes from Game of Death get extended treatment here, giving a clearer sense of what the unfinished film was meant to be than the truncated 1978 release ever showed. Little treats Lee as a working martial artist and thinker rather than a legend, using the archival material to make that case directly rather than through narration alone. It stays close to the sources: the man's own words and the footage he left behind.
