In the Bulgarian mountain village of Ribnovo, population around 3,000, every wedding pulls the whole community into a multi-day ritual that predates the Islam its Pomak Muslim residents practice today. Women from the groom's family paint the bride's face in thick, colorful makeup, then lead her, eyes closed, into her husband's home, where the paint is washed off before she is allowed to open her eyes and begin married life. The film follows 20-year-old bride Nevse Kiselova as her dowry, including cooking pots, slippers and 47 blankets, goes on public display outside her home for neighbors to inspect and judge, a custom so costly that families start saving the moment a daughter is born. Local advocate Mustafa Emin appears pushing for UNESCO recognition of the ritual as intangible cultural heritage, lobbying politicians and cultural experts while also promoting tourism to the region. The documentary moves between wedding preparations, interviews with villagers, and Emin's advocacy work, building a portrait of a tradition its own community is trying to keep alive.
