Professor Alice Roberts and the Digging for Britain team compile four episodes' worth of excavations from across the UK. In the Cotswolds, archaeologists lift a silver-gilt sword pommel and a silver buckle from an early 6th-century Anglo-Saxon grave, while at Barrow Clump the team examines human remains disturbed by military training and investigates coastal burials that may belong to shipwreck victims. Further north, one crew searches for Lady Jane Grey's childhood home and finds a 16th-century garderobe still holding 600-year-old waste, another hunts a lost Viking drinking hall, and a third turns up a hoard of Roman goods. Mesolithic settlement sites and Roman villas follow, along with the raising of a WWII Fairey Barracuda bomber from the English Channel, a Lake District hostel that once sheltered Holocaust survivors, and the excavated barracks of US Army paratroopers near Salisbury. Roberts narrates throughout, with site footage and interviews carrying each dig from discovery to interpretation.
