In a small village in Northern Malawi, a local soccer team becomes the thread linking four intertwined lives. Chatwa, the team captain, is a farmer buried in debt to the local bank while torrential rains wreck his crops, yet he keeps pushing his squad toward the local championship. Jake, an American Peace Corps volunteer who sponsors the team, watches its politics collide with the school construction project he's supposed to be running. Jacqueline, the head cheerleader, suspects her husband is unfaithful and worries about contracting HIV as she keeps leading the sideline. Mlawa, a midfielder and expectant father, tries to hold his family and his position on the team together while an infection spreads on his leg. The film cuts between these four storylines rather than following one protagonist, letting the championship season serve as the frame for ordinary crises: money, health, marriage, and work. An interview with researcher Kim Yi Dionne, discussing her survey of rural Malawians, closes out the film.
