A 1,700-kilometer ride on Vietnam's "Reunification Express" carries this film from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City over roughly 32 hours. The train's first stop is the Trang An Landscape Complex, home to the endangered Delacour's langur, before the route crosses the Ben Hai River at the 17th parallel, once the border between North and South Vietnam and the site of some of the war's bloodiest fighting. In Hue, the imperial-era capital, the filmmakers leave the train to watch a Royal Ballet performance. Further south the line runs along the South China Sea through the Ocean Cloud Pass, the climatic divide between the country's north and south, and a stop in Da Lat brings a motorcycle detour into the surrounding mountains. The journey ends the next morning in what was once Saigon. Built quickly after the war as a tool of reconciliation between North and South, the railway itself becomes the film's real subject, a physical thread tying together landscapes, history, and the people who ride it.
