Mixed martial arts has grown from a fringe spectacle into a billion-dollar sport, but journalist Mariana van Zeller turns her camera away from the McGregors and Rousleys of the world and toward the amateurs who fill smaller cages across the country. She interviews male and female fighters before and after bouts, asking plainly why anyone chooses to trade punches and blood for little money and less recognition, and the answers range from discipline and community to something closer to compulsion. One stop takes her to a church run by a man known as the Fight Pastor, who trains young men to fight while preaching to them, a combination that sits somewhere between ministry and gym. Van Zeller also sits in on training sessions, watching the repetition and injury that precede any actual match, and follows fighters into the cage itself for the fights that last minutes but take months to prepare for. The film stays close to its subjects rather than the sport's business side, treating cage fighting as a subculture with its own logic worth explaining rather than judging.
