Stefan Gates, a British food writer, sets out to find whether insects could solve a global food shortage, and tests his own disgust reflex along the way. In Thailand and Cambodia he meets people who hunt, farm, and sell bugs for a living, joining grasshopper hunts at night and watching ant colonies harvested despite their bite. He works his way through deep-fried locusts, ant egg salad, and barbecued tarantula, treating each dish as both meal and evidence. The number driving the argument is stark: insects outweigh humans on the planet by roughly 40 tonnes to one, a resource Gates sets against a food system where grain gets funneled into meat for wealthy countries while people elsewhere go hungry. He watches insect farming run at industrial scale and asks the people doing it whether this could actually feed more mouths than livestock does. The film closes on the harder question: not whether insects can be eaten, but whether Britain, and places like it, would ever choose to eat them.
