Part of his work means testing bushmeat sold in local markets, which requires talking hunters and vendors into cooperating with a project that could threaten their livelihood. His samples travel from a rainforest field lab to Germany, where Professor Fabian Leendertz at the Helmholtz Institute for One Health maps global outbreak risk and traces how closely a market in Central Africa connects to a hospital in Europe.
