Forest scientist Stefan Scharfe has planted fourteen 'tiny forests' in Germany and Poland, including one in the shade of a multi-storey car park at a hospital in Herford, using a dense-planting method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. DW Documentary follows him explaining how rebuilding decades-old forest soil, not just planting saplings, is what makes these urban plots cool the air and shelter birds and insects. In Brazil, Miriam Prochnow and Wigold Schaffer, who started growing tropical trees on their terrace in the 1970s, now run a nonprofit nursery with 25 employees that has planted nine million trees to fight clear-cutting in the Atlantic Forest. The film also visits researchers from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, including Carsten Mann, who work with Colombia's Kogi people to fold Indigenous knowledge of drought and pest damage into forest science. Moving between German car parks, Brazilian nurseries, and Colombian mountains, the film asks whether these small-scale, soil-first reforestation efforts can add up to something that matters against a changing climate.
