Canada legalized medical marijuana about fifteen years before this series was made, letting patients grow their own, buy from an independent licensed producer, or order through a supplier contracted by Health Canada. New rules introduced in April 2014 squeeze out those independent producers in favor of large corporate growers, and host Damian Abraham, a medical marijuana user himself, sets out to see what that change actually does to patients. He tours two sprawling Ontario production facilities packed with rows of plants under industrial lighting, then heads to Jim's Weeds in Vancouver, a dispensary serving edibles and smoke-free products to seniors and children. Lawyer John Conroy and activist Jodie Emery argue that corporatizing the supply hurts the people it was meant to protect, and Abraham backs that up with direct conversations: a man with multiple sclerosis, a man with HIV, and a couple whose infant depends on cannabinoid extract to control seizures. The series stays close to individual cases rather than abstract policy debate.
