Cannabis Research Studies
Israel has become the center of cannabis research, and this film follows the work of Raphael Mechoulam, the chemist who first isolated THC and CBD in the 1960s and is often called the grandfather of marijuana research. His research has drawn support from the National Institute of Health for more than four decades, even as the United States keeps cannabis classified as a Schedule 1 drug. The film contrasts that legal status with Israel's own approach, where the Ministry of Health has approved more than a dozen studies using cannabis to treat PTSD, chronic pain, Crohn's disease, and cancer. Mechoulam and other researchers describe how these compounds interact with the body and what current trials are testing. The film lays out the gap between where the science stands and where the law stands, using Israel's more permissive research environment as the clearest example of what gets studied when that gap narrows.
