Five thousand sailors and Marines say goodbye to families on the pier before the USS Nimitz pulls out of San Diego for a six-month deployment. The series follows the aircraft carrier's crew through the cramped, loud, relentless routine of life at sea, from flight deck launches to mess hall lines to the small rebellions and friendships that form when thousands of people live stacked on top of each other in a floating city. Officers and enlisted sailors speak on camera about why they joined, what they miss, and what the ship costs their marriages and their nerves. The film does not romanticize the deployment or condemn it; it stays close to individuals, including young Marines on their first cruise and veteran chiefs keeping the flight deck from killing someone through simple exhaustion. Episodes move between departments, showing the mechanics, the pilots, the chaplains, and the officers who run the ship, building a picture of a modern aircraft carrier as both a weapon and a small town that never gets to go home.
