Castle Ghosts of England
Sir Robert Hardy hosts this episode of a BBC miniseries on Britain's haunted castles, this installment devoted to England, with companion episodes covering Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Hardy leads viewers through Muncaster Castle, Sudeley Castle, and the Tower of London, recounting the ghost stories attached to each: the spectral inhabitants said to still walk their halls, the deaths and executions behind the legends, and the witnesses who claim to have seen or heard something they cannot explain. The film mixes on-location footage of the castles themselves with narration that lays out each haunting's backstory before weighing what, if anything, might lie behind it. Rather than settling the question, the episode treats the hauntings as inherited folklore worth taking seriously as history and as story, letting the architecture and the centuries of use behind each site do much of the persuading. It aired in Britain on the BBC and later reached American audiences via TLC.
