Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya never planned to run a country. When her husband Sergej, a blogger turned presidential candidate, was jailed by Belarusian authorities in 2020, she filed her own candidacy in his place. Turkish journalist Can Dündar, himself exiled from Turkey after exposing government arms shipments to Syria, follows her from that unlikely campaign through the disputed election, in which Alexander Lukashenko claimed roughly 80 percent of the vote, to the mass street protests and death threats that pushed her into exile in Lithuania. Dündar travels with her as she meets world leaders, collects awards, and keeps pressing for the release of political prisoners, including her own husband. Interviews and on-the-road footage build a portrait of someone still uneasy in the role fate handed her, more homemaker than politician by her own account, now the public face of an opposition movement she never sought to lead. The film asks plainly what it takes to keep fighting for a country you can no longer enter.
