Wildland firefighting looks heroic from a distance, and this film gets close enough to show what it actually costs. It follows crews battling blazes across the American West, tracking the physical toll on the firefighters themselves and the financial toll on the agencies that deploy them. Interviews with firefighters, commanders, and policy voices lay out a system straining under bigger and more frequent fires, tighter budgets, and the growing number of homes built at the edge of fire-prone wilderness. The film treats the fires as only half the story; the other half is the funding fights, the staffing shortages, and the hard choices about which structures get defended and which get written off. Footage from the fire lines sits alongside quieter scenes of exhausted crews between shifts, giving a sense of the job as sustained grind rather than single dramatic rescues. By the end the question isn't whether the fires can be beaten back, but whether the current approach to paying for that fight is sustainable at all.
