Alesh Poudel lives in a crematorium on the banks of the Ganges in Nepal, one of a group locals call the "dirty boys," who survive on what mourning families leave behind after cremating their dead. The film opens with Poudel, twelve years old, telling the camera he expects to be dead by thirteen, a line delivered flatly, more resignation than despair. He bathes and swims in ash from the funeral pyres, describes the river as a channel straight to the gods, and talks about his four-year-old sister as pure "like the water of the Ganges," apparently missing the irony. Interviews and observational footage follow him through family strain and daily scrambling for money, tracing what growing up fatherless and half-feral on sacred ground does to a child's sense of home and heaven. Some passages go without subtitles, leaving English-speaking viewers briefly outside the conversation, whether by omission or by choice. The film raises questions about family and community obligation in Nepal that it does not fully resolve.
