The 2011 tsunami that devastated Japan's northeastern coast, and the Fukushima nuclear meltdown that followed, sets the stage here, but the film's actual focus is narrower: children between seven and ten who lived through both disasters. It opens on their ordinary lives before the wave hit, then follows what happened once it did, as entire towns were destroyed and families were displaced by radiation fears as well as flooding. The children describe losing homes, schools, and in some cases relatives, and the film stays with them as they try to make sense of it, leaning on each other and on the adults still holding their communities together. Rather than dwelling on disaster footage for its own sake, the film uses the children's accounts to show what recovery actually looks like day to day, small routines rebuilt, friendships that become a coping mechanism, grief that doesn't resolve on schedule. It is a portrait of a catastrophe told at child height.
