China: What Do Young People Dream Of? (Part 2)
DW's second installment follows young Chinese people who are quietly breaking with the ambitions their parents held. Filmed inside apartments, studios, and nightclubs, the documentary lets its subjects speak for themselves rather than narrating over them: a painter, an influencer, a young millionaire, rock musicians, and self-described rebels talk about what they actually want out of life as China's economic boom slows and youth unemployment rises. One woman says her dream "shouldn't be built on my children, but on myself," while a young man admits he just wants enough money to do what he enjoys rather than chase career success. The film sets these voices against the backdrop of the official "Chinese Dream" of prosperity through hard work, showing a generation opting out of that bargain in favor of personal fulfillment, creative work, or simply less pressure. Framed as a companion to a daytime episode covering the same subjects, this nighttime half focuses on culture, rebellion, and identity rather than economics alone.
