Frédéric Chopin's music, this film argues, cannot be separated from the women who inspired it. Pianist James Rhodes travels to Warsaw, Paris, and London for the composer's bicentenary, tracing four relationships that shaped specific compositions. Konstancja Gladkowska, a soprano Chopin loved as a teenager in Warsaw, comes first. Delfina Potocka, a Polish countess in Paris with a scandalous reputation, follows. Pauline Viardot, a composer and opera singer, shared a real artistic bond with him, and Jenny Lind's singing moved him during his final months. Rhodes plays the piano works tied to each woman on camera, while opera singer Natalya Romaniw performs the arias that Chopin himself heard and responded to. The film moves chronologically through his life, using these four relationships as a structure for understanding why the music sounds the way it does, treating the female voice, literal and romantic, as a direct source for his piano writing rather than background biography.
