Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, a small group of citizen journalists, set out to document ISIS atrocities in their hometown after the group declared it the capital of its self-styled caliphate. The film follows members like Aziz and Hussam as they smuggle footage out of Syria, watch friends and family members murdered on camera in retaliation, and relocate to Germany, where exile brings its own dangers: ISIS supporters track them online, and far-right protesters in Berlin accuse them of being terrorists themselves. Matthew Heineman intercuts their present-day lives abroad with the raw phone footage they risked their lives to capture inside Raqqa, including executions staged for propaganda videos. The group keeps publishing anyway, arguing that silence is what allowed the city to fall in the first place. The film sits with the psychological cost of that decision as much as with the war itself, showing men who escaped a war zone only to relive it nightly on their own laptops.
